How many laser treatments will I need?

The number of sessions is one of the first things to ask about when you look at a laser plan.

Counting the laser sessions in a plan

The clinician who looks at your skin is the one to estimate it. Ask: "How many sessions do you expect for me, and how will we know when to stop?"

Three smiling friends stand on an East River ferry as one points to three small treatment markers on her cheek at golden hour.

Why session count is a budget question

For a beginner, the number of sessions is mostly about cost and commitment. Ask:

  1. How many sessions do you recommend, and what is the total price?
  2. Is it possible to start with one session and decide afterward?
  3. How far apart are the sessions, and how much downtime does each one need?
  4. What would a good result look like for me, and how will we measure it?

Keep each clinic's answers on one sheet of paper so you can compare two of them side by side.

If a clinic suggests other treatments alongside lasers, ask what each one adds to the cost and the number of visits. To get familiar with laser procedures before that conversation, try a hospital health library's overview of laser procedures.

Starting with just one session

Arrange a consultation and ask whether you could start with a single session. If light-based extras come up, a health science company has an explainer on red light therapy, and you can bring questions from it.

Who can estimate your number

Only a licensed clinician who has seen your skin in person can estimate how many sessions you would need.
